A potato chip (aka - Saratoga Chips) (American English chips, British English crisps) is a thin slice of potato deep fried or baked until crispy.
Potato chips serve as an appetizer, side dish, or snack. Commercial varieties are packaged for sale, usually in bags. The simplest chips of this
kind are just cooked and salted, but manufacturers can add a wide variety of flavoring (mostly made using herbs, spices, cheese, artificial
additives or MSG). Chips are an important part of the snack food market in English-speaking countries and many other Western nations.
A pretzel is a bread pastry of Medieval European (probably Italian origin, that has the shape of a three looped knot or twisted braid.
Pretzels are either soft or hard. Hard pretzels have evolved into a variety of shapes from knotted loops to straight "pretzel sticks" (called
"Salzstangen" in German, Ropi in Hungarian). The pretzel dough is made from wheat flour, water, sugar, and yeast, sprinkled with coarse
salt. Pretzels are typically glazed with lye and salted. Pretzels can be found in a variety of shapes and sizes. Traditional soft pretzels are
about the size of a hand. Most hard pretzels are only 2-3 mm thick. Hard pretzels which are 0.8-1.5 cm thick are called Bavarian pretzels.

Our tradition of good taste dates back to 1909 when Harry V. Warehime, founder of Hanover Canning Company,
our parent company until 1980, began producing Olde Tyme Pretzels for the Hanover Pretzel Company.
In the 1920's, Grandma Eda and Edward Snyder II began frying potato chips in a kettle at their home on Centennial
Avenue during the summer months and peddling the home cooked snack door-to-door and to fairs and farmers'
markets. Their son, William V., and his wife Helen made angel food cakes in their basement for local stores. In
1924, the families combined their home businesses and Snyder’s Bakery took up residence at the rear of 238
Centennial Avenue. In a unique product combination, the bakery produced noodles to use the egg yolks left over
from the angel food cakes. This efficient process continued into the 1960s, when the automated process for snack
production took over.

Earl’s chips enjoyed instant popularity and rapid growth in the eastern United States for the remaining century.
For over 85 years, from small batches in his mother’s kitchen to a remodeled garage to the current state-of-the-art
facility, one thing has never changed: Earl Wise, Sr., and the company that bears his name, makes terrific,
all-natural chips.
Earl Wise’s great success with his potato chip company attracted the attention of Borden Condensed Milk Co., Inc.
During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Borden was acquiring a variety of companies involved in chemicals, paints,
wallpaper, textile coatings, paper, and plastics. In 1964, Borden bought the Wise® Potato Chip Company, the
leading potato chip company in the eastern United States.
